Albertha McGhie affectionately called “Ms. Maggie” passed away peacefully from this life on the morning of October 11th 2019, after a gradual decline in health. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family and dear friends during the last days of her life. Her life will stand as an example of how one’s faith in God, one’s love for others and one’s willingness to serve others, can produce such a woman…..a woman after God’s own heart. Miss Maggie was a dedicated member of the Triumphant Apostolic Church here in Brooklyn, and the Vineyard Apostolic Church in Jamaica.
Ms. Maggie was born in Salt Springs, St. Elizabeth, in Jamaica on Feb 1, 1945. She is the 9th of ten (10) children, seven girls and three boys born to Joseph and Lillian Lewis. Ms. Maggie received her formal education at the Arlington All Age School in Salt Springs. While living in Salt Spring Ms. Maggie met and married her first husband, Hubert Francis. The father of her three (3) children, Michael, Annette and Curtis. Raising her children was her life’s passion.
Following the early and unexpected death of her husband in 1986, she would later migrate to the United States of America in search of a better life for her and her family. Through a chance encounter she met and married her husband Ivan McGhie she would often tell the story of how she saw him in a vision before she actually met him. They pledge to stay together for better or worse, in good times and bad ones, in sickness and in health, until death do they part. Ms. Maggie and McGhie made good on that commitment. Her last words in life spoken to him several days before was, “love you”. Indeed she did.
Ms. Maggie is survived by her husband Ivan and her three(3) children, whom she loved dearly. She loved each of you for your own unique qualities. Mickey, you were her first born, she loved your intensity and your convictions. Annette, you are her only daughter, she loved your relentlessness and your never-give- up attitude. Curtis you are her wash-belly, “mama-star”, she loved your ambitiousness and your loyalty. To her thirteen (13) grand-children and 5 great -grand, just the mere mention of you would bring a smile across her face. To her many family and friends who have come from near and far to remember and honor her today, I leave you with these words….Rejoice! There is a Savior, a Father in Heaven above, Who watches over us and surrounds us with His love. He takes us in his arms and tenderly holds us there, Gently, He guides us over the path, leading along with sweet tender care.
