On June 25, 2020, Ethel Florence Cox passed away peacefully in her sleep. She was 93 years old.
Ethel is survived by her daughter Karen, her sons Kwame and Leonard, her sisters Yvonne, Monica and Beverly, her brother Barry, her grandchildren Michelle, Meloney, Kyoko, Shara, Nishani, Kanyessa and Talita, and twelve great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her ex-husbands Sydney Mesquitta and Garfield Cox.
Ethel, or Etsie, as she was known to her family, was born in St Thomas Jamaica to Ferdinand Rosario and Zepora Fuller. In 1956, she married the love of her life, Sydney Mesquitta. After her divorce in 1963, she entered the workforce as a nursing attendant while raising her three children. She played the role of mother and father, and despite her struggles, she always provided a loving and warm home for her children.
She loved action movies, the fiercer the better, and collected cheap trinkets, the kind found in dollar stores. She was a firm disciplinarian. She did not readily display emotions, but she was playful, a side of her she mostly reserved for her grandchildren. She loved to cook, and she was good at it, oh she was so good at it. She was an amazing seamstress. We understand in hindsight that she was an artist, even if she did not recognize it, as we share memories of the beautiful embroidered patterns that would emerge from her sewing machine, and her delight as she would lay out beds of roses in the garden at her home in Jamaica.
Though Ethel’s health was failing for years, few people knew the extent to which she struggled. Her will and determination kept her pushing through the pain. When anyone else would have broken, she stayed strong. There was no quit in her. Just because she is no longer here, it doesn’t mean she lost her fight. So today we are here to celebrate her life. Through her, we know what it means to be resilient and to persevere no matter what the odds are, a lesson that will serve us well in these surreal times.
